Georgia administers its own state-specific bar examination, not the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE). The Georgia Bar Exam is a two-day exam developed and graded by the Georgia Office of Bar Admissions, using the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) and Multistate Performance Test (MPT) as components alongside four Georgia-specific essay questions.
The exam consists of: four Georgia-specific essay questions (28.6%) and two MPT tasks (21.4%) on Day 1, and the 200-question MBE (50%) on Day 2. A combined scaled score of 270 (out of 400) is required to pass. Applicants must also pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) with a score of 75 or higher — Georgia does not impose a time limit on MPRE scores.
Applicants must first obtain a Certification of Fitness before registering for the bar examination.
NextGen UBE transition. Georgia will begin administering the NextGen UBE in July 2028, which will include a Georgia jurisdiction-specific requirement. The minimum NextGen passing score has not yet been announced.
Georgia Bar Exam Structure
Day 1: Georgia Essays + MPT (50%)
Four Georgia-specific essay questions, 45 minutes per question (3 hours total), test Georgia state law. The two Multistate Performance Test (MPT) tasks, 90 minutes each, test fundamental lawyering skills in realistic scenarios.
Day 2: Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) (50%)
200 multiple-choice questions in two 3-hour sessions (100 questions each). The MBE is developed and graded by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE).
The MBE tests 7 subjects: Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law & Procedure, Evidence, Real Property, and Torts.
Certification of Fitness
Before applying for the Georgia Bar Examination, applicants must first obtain a Certification of Fitness from the Georgia Office of Bar Admissions. The fitness application process includes a character and fitness investigation conducted by the Georgia Board to Determine Fitness of Bar Applicants.
